Any cartridge has the capacity to create a certain quantity of copies. Although a particular printer cartridge might appear to be more costly than a cheaper alternative, it quite often has the ability to output a higher number of copies. For the majority of printers, a specific printer cartridge is needed for it to operate.

There are also some printers that require more than one type of cartridge depending on the kind of copies produced. Typically, color printers need at a minimum two cartridges to create color copies. Other types of printers need four cartridges for color printing jobs.
